255 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HALSTEAD, Frances Mary Frances was born in Toronto, Ontario on November 18, 1922. She enlisted in the Air Force on August 20, 1942 and was stationed in Patricia Bay, BC and then RCAF Headquarters in Ottawa as a clerk administrator during World War II. She was discharged on November 19, 1945. Frances married and raised four children before joining the CWAC Militia from 1961 to 1965. She was a long-time Legion member at the Beaches until retirement, and then was a member of Legion Branch 381 in Apsley. Frances passed away on April 12, 2011. HAMILTON, Wilfred Veach Wilfred was born in St. Thomas, Ontario on October 12, 1896. He enlisted in the Army on December 8, 1915 and served with the 1st Canadian Infantry in Canada, England and France during World War I. While serving in France with 142 Battalion he was very badly wounded to both legs and was taken to England where his right leg was amputated. He had many surgeries and had the flu from the epidemic. After his discharge on October 19, 1920, Wilfred came home and became a member of the War Amps of Canada. He was also a member of Acacia Lodge. Wilfred was awarded the 1914-18 British War Medal and the 1914-1919 Victory Medal. Wilfred passed away on April 9, 1964. HALSTEAD, Frank Russell Frank was born in Toronto, Ontario on December 28, 1921. He enlisted in the Army in February 1941 and served with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada. He was assigned to the British Garrison in Jamaica to guard prisoners of war for two years during World War II. He was sent to the United Kingdom, through Normandy and then on to Northeast Europe. Returning to Toronto, Frank was a Legion member in the Beaches branch. He was discharged in January 1946. Retired, he joined Branch 381 in Apsley, where he served as President and Sgt. At Arms. He was recognized by the Netherlands for the liberation of Holland, and received the French Jubilee of Liberty medal. He passed away on June 21, 1998.
