253 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HALL, John A. John was born in Port Sandfield, Ontario on August 29, 1922. He joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in May 1942 and served in Central Europe during World War II. Although he was blind in one eye, he managed to enlist. John was discharged in September 1945 and went on to drive a taxi in Toronto for several years. John passed away on May 26, 1989. HALL, Samuel Duncan Samuel was born in Wakefield, England on October 18, 1928. He enlisted in the Air Force in June 1956 and served with the RCAF 2451 AC&W Squadron in Canada. He was discharged in August 1960. After his military service, Sam received BA and B.Ed. degrees and was the principal for the North York Board of Education from 1960 to 1968. In 1968 he took a two year assignment to be the principal at the Canadian Forces School in Lahr, Germany. Returning to Canada in 1970, he re-joined the North York Board as a principal, retiring in 1984. Sam has been a member of Richmond Hill Legion Branch 375 for 43 years. HALL, Norman William Norman was born in Muskoka, Ontario on October 20, 1920. Artillery Gunner and Trainer, Norman was stationed out of Victoria, BC during World War II in the unit managing the big guns guarding the entry to the inside Passage between Vancouver Island and the mainland. He told of Japanese ships and submarines trying to enter the harbor, and about incendiary balloons sent on the westerly winds, to start forest fires in northern BC and Alberta thus tying up Canadian troops to fight fires. Norman seldom spoke of his war service. He contracted rheumatic fever and was hospitalized. His long convalescence culminated in Lethbridge, Alberta where he met his wife in 1947. His lifetime career was with Agriculture Canada. Norman did community service with B.P.O.E. Elks’ Lethbridge Lodge. He was a member of RCL General Stewart Branch 37 Lethbridge, Alberta. Norman passed away on June 17, 2010.
