239 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GORMAN, John “Loren” Loren was born in Millville, NB on May 31, 1919. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on December 26, 1940 in Halifax, NS. Upon completion of his training at Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec and Navy Signal School in Halifax, he became a qualified Signalman and served on the destroyers HMCS Ottawa and HMCS St Laurent. He also sailed on the corvette class ship HMCS Shawinigan. Loren sailed the North Atlantic Ocean and remembers sinking a German submarine capturing about twenty prisoners who informed them the war was over for the Germans but lasting another six months for the Canadians and sure enough six months later WWII ended. His medals include the 1939-45 Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, King George VI medal and the War Medal 1939-45. Loren was honourably discharged in July 1945 at the rank of Petty Officer. His grandson Jeffrey Arrand is still serving. GOUDIE (LLOYD), Norma F. Norma was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on January 17, 1943. She enlisted in the Air Force in January 1958 and served as a nurse with the RCAF in Greenwood, Nova Scotia. She was a member of the rifle club and entered many competitions. Norma also belonged to the drama club. She represented the RCAF Greenwood in the Miss Annapolis Valley beauty contest. She did social work in PMQs through the station hospital and also air-vac patients to larger hospitals. She was discharged on February 6, 1961. Norma has been a member of Guelph Legion Branch 234 for three years. GOUDIE, Michael R. Michael was born in Toronto, Ontario on June 23, 1940. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1958 and served as a Telecom Air Tech with the RCAF in Greenwood, NS. He was discharged on July 19, 1966. Michael travelled often as he worked on the Argus. He was President of the Airmen’s Mess for several years. He played golf, baseball, curling, hockey and bridge. He was a family man and enjoyed his time in the service. He was a member of Guelph Legion Branch 234. Michael passed away on March 18, 2011.
