After graduating from CProC School at Camp Borden in May 1962 he was sent to Calgary. He also spent time in Penhold and Wainwright before being transferred to CJATC in Rivers Camp, Manitoba. Once while he was providing paymaster escort inside a Manitoba bank, an 80 year old lady paused for a short time in front of him, then casually said: “My, you’re enough to scare anyone” and walked away. As an OPP Officer he was posted first to Toronto, then to Walkerton, where in 1966 he became School Safety Officer for both Walkerton and Kincardine. In 1977 he became Community Services Coordinator for the district. The main thing he remembers from his time in the OPP is the hundreds of people from all walks of life who have come up to him and said: “I remember you, you’re Constable Gaeler. You used to come to my school.” Gary has been a member of Chesley Legion Branch 144 for over 39 years.
