215 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FRIEND, Norman John Born Nanne Jan Vriend on May 21, 1912 in Andijk, Netherlands, Norman enlisted with the 21st Infantry Regiment incorporated as an ordinary conscript of the 1932 class ex in the municipality of Andijk. During World War II, Norman was enlisted to the Interior Military Forces of The Netherlands Underground Army (resistance movement) Region 11, North-Holland, Combat Section, District III Hoorn, 3rd Company. He served under Allied Command. He received the following medals: Mobilization, War Cross, and Interior Military Fighting Strength. In July 1951, Norman, his wife Janet and their ten children boarded a ship to cross the Atlantic to immigrate to the land of opportunity in Canada to settle down and start a new life. Nanne Jan translated his name to Norman John after arriving to his new chosen adopted country. Norman worked hard as a landscaper and later in the care taker business and was a very proud Canadian. Norman passed away on March 24, 2005 and is resting in Newmarket, Ontario where he lived for many years. FRYER, Thomas L. Thomas was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on October 26, 1907. Thomas came to Canada in 1928 and his bride, Violet, came in 1930. He enlisted in the Army on April 7, 1941 and served with the Armour Corps, Royal Canadian Dragoons in Canada and the United Kingdom during World War II. He was discharged on October 24, 1945 and was awarded the Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the 1939-45 Star. Thomas worked for Consumers Gas and had four daughters. He passed away on December 19, 1968. FRIZZEL, Elwood J. Elwood was born in Vail Point, Sydenham Township on March 15, 1921. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served with the Brockville Rifles in Canada and Jamaica during World War II. He was discharged in 1946. Elwood passed away on July 20, 2009.
