209 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FORTIN, Arthur E. Arthur was born in Toronto, Ontario on July 3, 1921. He enlisted in the Army in May 1942 and served with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry in Europe on D-Day during World War II. He was wounded in Holland and also received the Medal of Honour from France for Bravery and Courage. Arthur was discharged on May 10, 1945. He was an Engineer for the York Region. He has been a Life Member of Richmond Hill Legion Branch 375. FOSTER, Raymond Donald Raymond was born in Peterborough, Ontario on May 5, 1919. Sapper Raymond Foster, MM was the husband of Margaret and father of Barry. He enlisted in the Army on May 15, 1941 and served in Canada, Britain, France and Belgium during World War II. He died in Belgium on October 18, 1944 as a result of shrapnel from a Germany 88 mm shell while fighting with the 16th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers. A dispatch rider during D-Day, he took repeated trips along the road from Bernières-sur-Mer and Le Mare. Regardless of enemy snipers and mortar fire and, on more than one occasion, travelling when the infantry along the road were pinned down, Raymond’s courage was recognized by the awarding of the Military Medal for bravery in the field. Raymond was killed near the Scheldt Estuary, a major German stronghold, which Canadians had to clear in order to allow supplies to flow by ship into Antwerp. Raymond’s young widow was presented with the Memorial Cross in Ottawa in recognition for his sacrifice for Canada. He was 25. FOSTER, Raymond Barry Raymond was born in Peterborough, Ontario on March 21, 1941. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in August 1962 and received his basic training as Peacekeeper at 2 Manning Depot CFB St Jean, PQ. He remained on permanent staff upon graduation from 1962 to 1965 and worked as a Disciplinarian and also did a tour of duty in the Station Warrant Officer’s Office. In 1965, he transferred to CFB Clinton, ON where he also worked as a Disciplinarian and did a tour of duty at the Station Warrant Officer’s Office, looking after all the duty rosters for airmen up to the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1966, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal. He was honourably discharged in September 1968 to attend the University of Waterloo and graduated with a general Bachelor of Arts degree in May 1971. He was then employed by the Ontario Provincial Government as a Probation Officer from July 1971 until his retirement in August 1996. Raymond was a member of the Stratford Legion Branch 8 for two years. He presently resides in in Kitchener, Ontario.
