203 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FLEMING, Norman Norman was the youngest son of Thomas and Mary Matilda (Nattress) Fleming and was born on December 7, 1894 at Elder’s Mills, Vaughan Township, York County, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on July 17, 1915 with the 3rd University Company (PPCLI), in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He stated farming as his trade and had no prior military experience. He proceeded overseas from Halifax on September 4, 1915 to England, arriving in France November 27, 1915 and joining the PPCLI in the field on December 5, 1915. He served in Canada, England, Belgium and France during World War I. He was wounded on June 2, 1916 during the battle of Mount Sorrel at Ypres Salient, Belgium and was transferred to 13th General Hospital in Boulogne, France, where he died of wounds on June 7, 1916. Norman is buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, France. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. His mother received the King’s Penny and the Memorial Cross. He is commemorated on the Woodbridge, Ontario War Memorial. FLETCHER, David W. David was born on July 28, 1919 in Toronto, Ontario. He served in the Army during World War II from July 2, 1940 to October 22, 1945 with the Toronto Scottish Regiment-Trans Aux Serv Sec. While David was on leave in London, England he by chance met this brother George, who was also walking down the same street. The brothers did not meet again until after the war. He served in England and Continental Europe. During his service David received a war injury which he succumbed to several years later after returning to civilian life. For those several years David participated in many Veterans parades as a drum major, directing the Toronto Scottish Regiment Pipes and Drums band with a mace. He was a member of the Toronto Scottish Legion Branch for twelve years. David passed away on February 23, 1952. FLEMING, Russell James Russell, the son of James and Mona (Lequyer) Fleming, was born in Toronto, Ontario on August 15, 1922. He enlisted in the Army on October 14, 1942 and served with the 4th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery through to August 13, 1946, seeing service in Canada, England, Sicily, Italy, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was with a number of Army units but saw action primarily as a Bren Gun Carrier driver with the Saskatoon Light Infantry, which was the 1st Canadian Division’s Machine Gun unit. Russell met and married his Belgian War Bride, Josephine Jeanne De Vriendt in Holland in 1945. He was awarded the 1939-45 War Medal, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Upon returning to civilian life, Russell was employed as a driver with the TTC and resided in Richmond Hill with Josie and their two daughters. Russell passed away on August 7, 1985 and is buried in Elgin Mills Cemetery, Richmond Hill.
