463 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SPEER, Frederick E. “Fred” Fred was born on November 5, 1914 and raised in Arran Township, Bruce County. He came from a family of eleven children and fathered eight of his own. Two boys, David and Burton were born to Fred and Isabelle prior to the war and six were born upon his return. Joining the Army December 27, 1942, he served with the 4th Division in France, Belgium and Holland and was discharged November 17, 1945. Prior to the war, Fred worked as a farmhand but upon returning from overseas, Fred and brother Walter also a veteran jointly operated an International Harvester farm machinery sales and service shop until 1967. In 1967 Fred purchased the Stedman’s store in Tara and managed it until his death in 1974. Active in his community with fundraising for a new school and swimming pool, he also served as President of the Legion Branch 383 Tara. He enjoyed curling and golf. SPOWART, Thomas H. Thomas was born on March 2, 1943 in Welland. He enlisted in the Navy on January 4, 1961 and served in Canada and the High Seas. He was discharged on January 3, 1964. Thomas has been a member of the Talbot Trail Legion Branch 613 in Fonthill for 20 years. SPICER, Clifford R. “Cliff” Cliff was born on August 3, 1924 in Ottawa, ON. He enlisted and served with the U.S. Army. He was stationed at Dehra Dun in the foothills of the Himalayas, Cliffs Unit, 653rd Topographic Battalion supplied maps and location surveys for General Joseph Stillwell and Merrils’ Marauders and updated many maps and surveys of China, Burma and India during World War II. The 653rd produced over nine million maps and sheets for the 14th and 10th Air Forces, the R.A.F, the XXth Bomber Command and the Eastern Air Command. They also produced walk out maps for the Office of Strategic Services. (O.S.S.). Cliff was a dedicated member of the Omemee Legion Branch 497 and served as Sgt.-at-arms for many years. His father served in the R.C.A.F.
