413 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PORTER, Norman O. Norman was born on August 31, 1941 in Englehart, Ontario. He joined the RCN in 1958 and served as a Millwright on the HMCS Gatineau and the HMCS Fort Erie. After their first child was born in 1963, he missed his family too much to be away all the time, so he didn’t re-enlist. He had several jobs but he has made his career in accounting, specifically as controller for Sherman Mine in Temagami, Ontario from 1967 to 1981. After accepting a Management position in 1981 with a tire company in Southern Ontario, they moved to several different communities there and in Southwestern Ontario. Retiring in 1999, they purchased a motorhome and spent the following years travelling across Canada, the United States and Mexico. It was eight years of seeing our wonderful country, making new friends everywhere they went and enjoying their retirement. One of his favorite memories is going to the 50th anniversary of the RCN in Halifax in 2010 and seeing two of his best friends that he has served with and had had not seen for many years. It was a great reunion and a wonderful show by the Navy. It was nice for him to go onboard on some of the ships that were in port at the time. POWER, Michael Michael was born on May 29, 1922 in Newfoundland. He enlisted in the Navy in 1940 and served in West Africa during World War II. He was a radio operator while serving as a Seaman for six years. After the war, he was part of the mine sweeping in the straits of Dover. He contracted Malaria twice while serving in Africa. Michael was discharged in 1946 and went to work in Califf, South Wales where he met his wife. POTTIE, Wallace A. Wallace was born on October 21, 1944 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He enlisted in the Navy on September 21, 1962. He served on the High Seas, in Canada and in Europe during Peacetime onboard the HMCS Cornwallis, Stadacona and Buckingham. He played Navy Squadron hockey and curling, was in the photographic section and was a tool crib attendant. He moved to Toronto in 1966 and worked in a cutting-tool sales company. Wallace has been a member of the Newmarket Legion Branch 426 for twenty-one years.
