397 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PAGE, Joseph E. Joseph was born on February 9, 1892 in Aldridge, England. He enlisted in the Army in 1914 with the 139 Battalion Cobourg Ontario, Machine Gun Division. He served in Canada and in England during World War I. He shot down an enemy aircraft that was attacking the south coast of England. He was discharged in 1918. Joseph was a member of the Cobourg Legion Branch 133 before he passed away on September 11, 1975. PALMER, Phillip E. Phillip was born on November 18, 1923. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Pilot Officer in October of 1942. He served in England and in Europe during World War II. He was discharged in August of 1945. Phillip was a member of the Simcoe Legion Branch 79. He passed away on May 27, 2004. PAISLEY, James W. James was born in Sarnia, Ontario on March 14, 1923. He grew up in Oil Springs, Ontario and attended the Oil Springs Continuation School. Jim Joined the 1st Hussars of London and Sarnia in April of 1941 (A589 6th Armoured Regiment – A Squadron). He left for England on November 12, 1941 via Halifax and taught gunnery, mechanics, and driving at Croborough, Garmborough and Great Yarmouth. On June 6, 1944, Jim was the driver of a DD tank at Juno Beach. The tank was swamped and sunk by a bow wave of an AA vessel. Five or Six crew members were rescued by a British patrol boat and returned to England. He returned to his regiment in France on June 12, 1944. Jim served through France and Belgium and was wounded during the liberation of Holland. He was discharged on January 15, 1946. A D-Day Sherman tank belonging to the 1st Hussars was rescued from the sea by Canadian forces from Lars, Germany and now stands on the beach at Courselles-sur-Mer. It is called “Audacieux” or “Bold”. Jim married Marjorie Lethbridge in 1954 and they have three children: Ann, Robert and Tom. He worked as a stationary engineer at the Sarnia General Hospital and at Shell Oil, Canada Ltd. Jim died on May 27, 2002.
