395 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND OWENS, Arthur Hillis “Art” Arthur was born in Toronto, Ontario on December 6, 1925 and had four brothers and one sister. Two of his brothers, Jack and Hector, served overseas, another brother served on the West Coast while Art’s father, John, served in the Merchant Navy. Art enlisted in the Air Force in 1940 and served in Canada and in England with #405 Squadron during World War II. In 1940-1943, Art served with the Army Reserve but joined the Airforce on August 10, 1943. He had training in Toronto and Arnprior before being sent to England. Art was an Armourer with #405 RCAF Squadron and nicknamed ‘Junior’ as he was the youngest in the squadron. He was responsible for hauling bombs to the aircraft via tractor and also for towing the airplanes into the hangar for service. His worst experience was when a fire broke out in the hangar while a tractor was being filled with gas. Attempting to put the fire out, Art’s clothes caught fire and he had to jump in a nearby pond to extinguish it. He was treated for burns, but due to a lack of beds in the hospital he returned to duty. In peacetime, Art worked for Canada Packers. He had two daughters and one son. He married Bernice Gardiner and they celebrated 42 years together. Art retired in 1989 and moved to Kinmount, ON. He passed away on August 18, 2008. Art was a member of the Kinmount Legion Branch 441 and others for 63 years. PAGE, Clifford R. Clifford was born on May 28, 1929 in Cobourg, Ontario. He enlisted in October of 1945 in the Amy with the 33rd Med. Regiment. He served during peacetime in Canada and was discharged in December of 1953. OXENHAM, Sydney E. Sydney was born on November 5, 1923 in Canada. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in November of 1941. He served in England, Burma and India with the Quadrant 436 during World War II. In 1947, he was transferred to reserve.
