383 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND NEWMAN, Eric Eric was born in Montreal on November 12, 1931. In 1949, at the age of seventeen, Eric enlisted in the Canadian Army and was assigned to the Armoured Corps and the Royal Canadian Dragoons as a tank driver. Following his training, Eric’s Squadron deployed to Europe in support of the 27th Canadian Infantry Brigade which then stood as a deterrent to Soviet aggression. Eric returned to Canada and was honourably discharged to civilian life in 1956. Moving to Glengarry, Ontario in 1982, Eric transferred to the RCL Branch 544 in Lancaster and quickly became a respected leader in the Legion Organization and a founding father of the Lancaster Air Cadet Squadron No. 253. Eric is a past President of Branch 544 and in 1993 was awarded the Legion’s highest honour, the Meritorious Service Medal. Eric was made a Life Member of The Legion in 2002 and in the same year received the Queen’s Jubilee Medal. NICHOLAS, Albert E. Albert was born in Coniston, Ontario on April 3, 1921. He enlisted in the Army with the 3rd Field Regiment of the R.C.A. on October 29, 1940. He served in England, Italy, France, Belgium, Germany and Holland during World War II. He was discharged on January 28, 1946. He received the Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Holland Star, Belgium, 1939-1945 Star and the Victory Medal. After the War, he moved to Wawa and got a job at A.O.D Company where he worked for five years. He then left to work for Jamestown Transit driving the warehouse truck and delivering equipment for the company. After that, he worked for the Township as Grader Operator for 15 years. In 1971, they started paving the streets and he took over as the Water and Sewer Foreman. Albert has been a member of the Legion Branch 429 for 60 years. NEWMAN, Jack L. Jack was born in Toronto, Ontario on August 8, 1921. He enlisted in the Army with the Royal Canadian Artillery on March 21, 1941. He served in England, Africa, Italy and the Netherlands during World War II. He was discharged on December 6, 1945. Jack was awarded the following Medals: 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the Thank You Canada and Allied Forces Medal (Netherlands). Jack was a member of the Mount Dennis Legion Branch 31 for 35 years before he passed away on April 26, 2013.
