375 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MURPHY, Douglas S. Douglas was born in Chesley, Ontario on November 21, 1917. He enlisted in the Army in 1940 and served in England and in France with the Highland Light Infantry during World War II. He went in on D-Day and was wounded at Caen, France when he was hit by mortar shells. He was discharged on August 2, 1945. He started a painting business then worked at a local furniture shop. He was a member of the Chesley Legion Branch 144 for fifty years. Douglas passed away on May 12, 1994. MURRAY, Thomas John “Jack” Jack was born in Toronto, Ontario on April 20, 1929. He enlisted in the Army on January 5, 1949 and served with the RCASC in Korea, Italy and Egypt during the Korean War. He was discharged in May of 1966. Jack has been a member of the Tottenham Legion Branch 329 for 27 years. MURPHY, George B. George was born in Gatineau, Quebec on March 23, 1923. He enlisted in the Army on November 5, 1942 and served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe with the Army Service Corps during World War II. In November of 1943, George was sent overseas as part of the Service Corps and was stationed at Hull, England prior to taking part in the invasion of Normandy. He was in the first wave of the invasion and was part of the liberation of Belgium and Holland. George was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-1945. He was discharged on March 8, 1946. In 1948, he married and began his career in INCO as an underground miner in Creighton Mine, Ontario. He is the proud father of nine children, twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. After retiring, he moved to Richmond, ON where he continues to be active in the community and as a member of The Royal Canadian Legion. His Legion awards include the Legion Lifetime Membership, the Meritorious Service and the Palm Leaf.
