361 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MITCHELL, Earl T. “Ted” Earl was born in Newmarket, Ontario on October 19, 1923. He enlisted in the Army on March 7, 1942. He served in England, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean area and Continental Europe during World War II with the Royal Canadian Corps Signals as a Signalman. He was discharged on February 12, 1946. Ted met and married Marjorie Rolling. They had two girls and lived in Newmarket until his death on May 19, 1991. He was a member of the Newmarket Legion Branch 426 for more than 50 years. MONTGOMERY, Samuel Samuel was born in Scott, Ontario on November 18, 1893. He enlisted in the Army on February 18, 1916 and served in England and France with the 116th Overseas Battalion C.E.F. during World War I. After his discharge, he settled in the Uxbridge area where he worked as a farmer and for The Toronto Star. He married and raised two children, William and Doreen. William fought in World War II. Samuel passed away in May of 1954. MITCHELL, John John was born on January 30, 1903 in Ayr, Scotland. John lived in Leamington, Ontario and settled in Blenheim, ON after the war. He was aboard the Corvette HMCS Ville De Quebec K242 on January 13, 1943 patrolling the Mediterranean Sea. They came in contact with a German submarine. After dropping a pattern of 10 depth charges, sub U-224 careened bow first to the surface, very close to the corvette. The corvette rammed bow first into the sub between the coning tower and the forward gun. Within four minutes the sub was out of sight. All 55 men on the German sub were lost. “Only one man survived”. This entire instance took only nine minutes. The corvette received a large rip in her bow. CERA John Mitchell, along with able seaman John Reid, rigged a collision mat on the bow, plugging the hole and allowing the Corvette to return to port for repairs. He was discharged on August 23, 1945. John Mitchell was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his actions. John passed away on July 1, 1978. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939 – 1945 Campaign Star and also the North Africa Star and Rosetta.
