357 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MILLS, Joseph A. Joseph was born in Moncton, New Brunswick on June 13, 1933. He enlisted in the Army on August 5, 1950 and served with the RCR in Korea during the Korean War. He was discharged in 1957. Joseph was a member of the Legion Branch 62 in Sarnia, Ontario for 25 years before he passed away on July 5, 2005. MILLS, Ralph E. Ralph enlisted in the Army on October 7, 1943 and served with the Hastings Prince Edward Regiment in Canada, England and Italy during World War II. He was discharged on March 20, 1946 and received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, 1939 – 1945 Star and the Italian Star. He was a member of the Wawa Legion Branch 429 for 68 years. Ralph was on many committees and was readily available to help anytime he was asked. Ralph continually worked hard for Branch 429 and has given service far above the regular call of duty time and time again. He was an active member of the Nevada Committee for over 6 years. He was also part of the local Christmas Hamper. He took active part in all branch activities such as Poppy sale, building maintenance, etc. Ralph was past President of Branch 429 and also held offices of Vice President, Executive Committee and Secretary. Ralph passed away on January 10, 2015. MILLS, Lenard G. “Len” Lenard was born in England on July 22, 1923. He enlisted in the Army on September 6, 1942 and served as a driver mechanic in the 1318 Fuzars Tank Regiment during World War II and was selected to train in a highly secret mission – that of floating tanks. He did his training six miles out to sea off the Shetland Islands. Len was on the D-Day invasion on June 6 and he landed on the beach at 7:20 am. At 7:26 am, his tank was hit with a shell and put out of action. He advanced to Bayeaux, France where he was assigned another tank. His regiment fought at Caen and the Falaise Gap. Lenard was in Germany at the end of the war and returned to England. Lenard was discharged at Gilford on February 5, 1947. He was awarded the Defence Medal and Germany Star. Len married Win Bushnell in 1951. They came to Canada in 1957 and became Canadian citizens. He worked as a miner for A.O.D. from 1957 until his retirement in 1985. They had two children. Len was a Branch 429 member for 47 years. Having joined in 1957, he served as Sergeant-At-Arms as well as other offices. Len passed away on July 1, 2004.
