353 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MIGHT, Esther M. Esther was born in Millbrook, Ontario on November 20, 1919. She enlisted in the Air Force on December 15, 1941 with the Bomber Command in Linton, ON and Ouse, Yorkshire. She served in Canada and in England during World War II. She spent time the first year, 1942, at a recruiting center in Hamilton, Ontario. Overseas, she worked for Station Administration Officer with Commanding Officer’s office next door. Esther did banking and kept records. The Women’s Division was on call by the Commander at all times, night and day. For instance, they were all called on the Tannoy to come and help him as there had been a crash in the night when bombers loaded with ammunition crashed on the runways on take-off and left them covered with shattered glass. They were to leave work and come immediately with their brooms and dust pans to clean up before they returned to base. Another time, during the night, the day after D-Day, he called all W.D.’s to a certain hanger to take a bus to the bomb dump to pack Century Bombs. Ammunition was running low. W.D.’s were glad to help. She was discharged on March 15, 1946. A member of the following all Women’s branch, the Elizabeth Smellie Branch in Peterborough for 65 years, Esther transferred her membership to Branch 52 Peterborough and has been a member there for over three years. MILHAUSEN, William J. “Bill” Bill was born in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan on January 10, 1918. He served as a Lieutenant with the I Cdn Corps Troops, Royal Canadian Engineers in the Italian Campaign, including assignments with the 12th and 4th Field Company where he earned a Mentioned in Dispatches. He was promoted to Captain and 2 i/c of the 3rd Field Company in Northwestern Europe in 1945. He served in England, Italy, Holland and Canada during World War II. He was the first Canadian to enter Amsterdam when it was liberated in May of 1945 and he subsequently led the 3rd Field Company back to Canada. After his discharge on October 31, 1945, Bill was appointed a Major in the RCE reserves and led the effort that saved St. Boniface in the floods of 1950. He went on to a successful career as the Managing Partner of a major Ontario architectural firm that designed and built the Bank of Canada building in Ottawa. Bill is a member of the Fort York Legion Branch 165. MIGNEAULT, Ronald A. Ronald was born in Kapuskasing, Ontario on September 1, 1947. He enlisted in the Army on February 11, 1965 with the 22nd Regiment “Vandoos” and served in Canada and in Germany with the rank of Private during Peacetime. Ronald got his discharge in Germany on March 3, 1968. He resides in Kapuskasing.
