349 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MERNICK, Lionel Lionel was born in Toronto, Ontario on December 22, 1919. He enlisted in the Army in 1939 and served with the Medical Core in England, North Bay, Netherlands and Normandy during World War II. He was discharged in 1947. His medals are the Invasion of Normandy and the Invasion of Netherlands (France). In civilian life, he worked as a cutter (ladies clothing), Sears store as a security guard and as a mortgage agent. Lionel has been a member of Legion Branch 256 for more than ten years. MERRIAM-HATT, Lenore Mildred Lenore was born in Port-Greville, Nova Scotia on November 14, 1906. She enlisted in the Army and served in England during World War II with the A.T.S. for three years and with the C-Company in Surrey, England with the S/D Group ATS Leatherhead. She was awarded the Defence Medal on May 10, 1946. She married veteran John Hatt in 1960 and raised 4 stepchildren on the farm in Lion’s Head, ON. Lenore came from a family of mariners in Nova Scotia. She passed away on April 1, 1997. MERRIAM, Chester M. “Ches” Chester was born in Tara, Ontario on February 15, 1910. He enlisted in the Air Force on May 18, 1940 and served in Canada as a Flight Sergeant with the Service Flying Training Unit during World War II. He was discharged in 1945. Ches was Zone C-4 Commander from 1951 to 1953; Ontario Provincial Command Chairman from 1957 to 1965; Dominion Command Chairman from 1962 to 1974 and Charter Member of Branch. After the war, he owned and operated Merriam Hardware Store in Tara. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for 28 years. Chester passed away on June 25, 1974.
