347 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MELANSON, Edward J. “Ed” Ed was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on June 14, 1929. He enlisted in the Army on August 31, 1948 and served with the No 197 Light Aid Detachment, Royal Canadian Electrical & Mechanical Engineers. Ed retired as a Sergeant after a twenty year career with the Canadian Army. His postings included Camp Hagersville, CFB Ottawa, CFB London, and a tour in Germany. He was also proud to serve as a peacekeeper with the United Nations Emergency Force in the Gaza Strip. He was discharged on December 15, 1968. His decorations included the Canadian Decoration, the Queen’s Jubilee Medal, the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal, and the United Nations Emergency Force Medal. After the military, Ed served as the clerk treasurer for the Village of Lucan, Ontario. Ed was a member of the St. Marys Legion Branch 236 for five years before he passed away on September 4, 2011. MERCER, David L. “Dave” Dave was born in Welland, Ontario on June 12, 1959. He enrolled in the Canadian Forces on November 1, 1977 as an Infantryman. After basic and trades training, he was posted to 2nd Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment Gagetown, New Brunswick. He is proud to have served with the Canadian Airborne Regiment in Petawawa. Attached postings include Cyprus, Bosnia and former Yugoslavia. His medals include SSM (NATO), Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal, UNCYP2, UN Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNMIBH), NATO Medal for the former Yugoslavia (NMFY), Canada’s 125th Anniversary Medal and the Canadian Forces Decoration. He retired on January 4, 2001 after 23 plus years at the rank of Warrant Officer. As a civilian, employed by General Dynamics. He served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Afghanistan for over a year 2006 – 2007 and was awarded the General Service Medal, General Campaign Medal (ISAF) Afghanistan along with the Commanders Commendation. David has been a member of the Sir Arthur Currie Legion Branch 116 for 28 years. MENZIE, Vernard C. Vernard was born in Trenton, Ontario on January 1, 1929. He enlisted in the Army in 1950 and Served with the Hasty Pees 27 Canadian Infantry in Germany during peacetime. He was discharged in 1952. Vernard has been a member of the Millbrook Legion Branch 402 for five years.
