327 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McCOURT, Arnold R. Arnold was born in Osceola, Renfrew, Ontario on September 29, 1923. He enlisted in the Army on June 26, 1941 and served in the United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean and Continental Europe in World War II. He spent four years overseas, including twenty months in Sicily, Italy and North West Europe. He enrolled an almost continuous period of operations which lasted nearly two years, during which time it earned 23 mentions in dispatches, and fought five months and nineteen days consecutively without being relieved. He returned to Canada on November 27, 1945. After the war, he lived in Falconbridge, married Cecile Jones from Garson and had five children. He worked in the mine in Sudbury and then became manager of Canada Manpower in Sudbury, Tillsongburg, Lemington, Simcoe, Chattam and now resides in Blenheim, ON. He was awarded the 1939 – 1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He is a member of the Blenheim Branch 185 and Simcoe Branch 79. McCULLOCH, James W. James was born in Calgary, Alberta on February 1, 1922. He enlisted in the Navy in March of 1942 and served on H.M.C.S. Longbranch on the Mid Atlantic and North Atlantic during World War II. The ship was 210 feet long with ninety men and ten officers. It was built in 1941 at Greenock, Scotland and made 110 crossings of the Atlantic with “C-6 Convoy” Captain Lt. Commander Barry O’Brien. He was discharged in November of 1945. James is a member of the Legion Branch 628 and has been a member of Branch 28 for twelve years. McCRACKEN, John L. John was born in Toronto (East York) on February 4, 1937. He enlisted in the Navy on January 10, 1956 and served during Peacetime in Canada, England and Scotland onboard H.M.C.S. Lanark, Magnificent and Sioux and on H.M.S/M. (Royal Navy Submarines) Seneschal, Seraph and Auriga in the engine room branch. John was discharged on April 11, 1962. He worked for Toronto Transit Comm. as a traffic inspector and had his own plumbing business. He is also a member of the Submariner Association of Canada and was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal by them. John has been a member of Legion Branch 459 in Stouffville, Ontario for 51 years.
