325 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McCLAFFERTY, Laurence Murray Laurence was born in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia on June 16, 1933. He enlisted in the Army on October 7, 1951 and served with the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers in Canada, Korea and Germany. He was commissioned from the rank of MWO and retired as a major. After retirement he volunteered with the Quinte West Fire Department for over twelve years. He has been a member of Legion Branch 110 for over twelve years and is a Life Member. McCONNEL, William J. William was born in Port Elgin, Ontario on November 2, 1890. He enlisted in the Army in September of 1915 and served with the B Company, 71st Battalion and 73rd Canadian Infantry Battalion (Royal Highlanders of Canada) in Belgium and France during World War I. Private McConnel was killed on September 11, 1916 in the “Great 73rd Gas Attack” and is buried in La Clytte Military Cemetery in Belgium. News of his death hit his home town of St. Marys hard. A group of young women engaged in fund raising and other war support efforts asked McConnel’s mother if they could name their club in his honour and she agreed. The McConnel club is still very active today, and celebrated its 100th birthday in September of 2014. McCONKEY, John S. John was born in Oshawa, Ontario on December 29, 1921. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served in England during World War II. He was discharged in 1946. John passed away on April 11, 2002.
