323 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McCABE, John John was born in Glasgow, Scotland on June 8, 1920. He came to Canada in 1932, the oldest of four. His mother died the next year. His family had a difficult time during the Great Depression. He enlisted in the Navy in July of 1942 and served on the North Atlantic during World War II. He was Chief Petty Officer on the ships: “Iroquois”, “Forest Hill” and “Orangeville”. John was discharged on December 10, 1945. After the war, he worked at the Ford Motor Co. for 35 years. John passed away on October 7, 1990. McCARTNEY, William H. William was born in Belfast, Ireland on September 18, 1909. He volunteered for Military Service with the R.C.E. Ontario Tank Corps and served in England, France, Germany and Malta during World War II. His medals include the 1939 – 1945 Star, Atlantic Star, Africa Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal. He was discharged in 1944. He did volunteer work at Branch 419 Port Perry, Ontario, service officer and Chairman of the Poppy Fund and continued his education until his death in 1977. McCALL, Clarence D. Clarence was born in Toronto, Ontario on April 2, 1893. A married man, he enrolled in the Army in mid-1915. He served during World War I in Canada, France and Belgium with the 92nd Infantry Battalion and 1st Battalion, Canadian Machine Gun Corps. His pre-war occupation was listed as “clerk”. He was wounded on September 26, 1916. He ended up in the Canadian Machine Gun Corps where his courage earned him the Military Medal (MM) for actions on August 8, 1918 and a bar to the medal – for a second award of the same medal noted in Routine Orders on November 11, 1918. His medals and other memorabilia are displayed with dignity and honour at Branch 50 in Kitchener. He was discharged on May 16, 1919.
