319 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MATTHEWS, Gordon R. “Gord” Gordon was born in St. George, Ontario on September 18, 1925. Gord enlisted in the Army on November 5, 1943 with the Toronto Scottish and became part of the 3rd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa. He served in Canada, England and Europe during World War II. Upon discharge in May of 1946, he returned home to farm and took up truck driving, which he did for 36 years. Gord has been a member of the Simcoe Legion Branch 79 for 55 years. MAY, Stuart N. Stuart was born in Guelph, Ontario on August 6, 1921. In 1940, at the age of eighteen, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force becoming a Flight Lieutenant. Completing training, he was posted to 418 Squadron Edmonton known as night intruder Squadron. During World War II, Stuart flew reconnaissance missions over Italy, France, Holland, Germany and Czechoslovakia. He flew many missions in the mosquito type aircraft. While attacking an airfield, he was shot down over Czechoslovakia and suffered seven months of horrific hardships until returning to England with help of Russian partisan fighters. Decorations include Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, France and Germany Star, 1939 – 1945 Star, and the War Medal 1939 – 1945. He was honourably discharged in October of 1945. In 2008, he returned to Slovakia to see people who had helped him and was presented with the Freedom Fighters Medal and the Slovakia Air Force Medallion. Stuart passed away on December 31, 2011 at the age of 90. He was a member of the Sir Arthur Currie Legion Branch 116 for six years. MAY, John A. John was born in London, England on October 6, 1931 and moved to Ontario in 1948. He enlisted in the Army in 1949 and served with the RCHA in Korea during the Korean War. He was a sergeant age 19 and retired in 1952 after three years of service. John is a member of the Port Perry Legion Branch 419.
