305 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MAJER, Edmond R. Edmond was born at the Canadian Embassy in Warsaw, Poland on November 16, 1924. He joined the 8th British Army, 11th Corps Provost in May 1942 and served in the Middle East and Europe during World War II. Edmond was discharged in July 1945 and became a Life Member of Bowmanville Legion Branch 178 of which he was Past President. He passed away on February 18, 2012. MANN, Charles W. Charles was born on June 29, 1922 in Port Hope, ON. He joined the militia in 1937 and the regular army in 1940. In 1942, he volunteered for the renowned First Special Service Force. He served in the Aleutians Island, Alaska, North Africa, Italy, France and the United States during World War II. As a member of the Special Service Force, he was involved in fierce fighting in Italy. In late 1944, when he was in southern France, the Special Service Force was disbanded. He was discharged in 1946 and married June Popkin of Montreal that same year. He had two children and three grandchildren. In 1964, they moved to Kincardine to work at the Bruce Nuclear Power Development as a nuclear operator. Charles has been a member of Kincardine Legion Branch 183. He also spent 27 years in municipal politics and 13 years as mayor. MALLORY, Lorne A. Lorne was born on September 9, 1924 in Toronto, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on June 30, 1943. He served with No. 433 Squadron and Canadian 6 Group Bomber Command in France, England and Germany during World War II. After a successful raid, Lorne remembered encountering flak and losing altitude on being hit. They crashed in the Vosges Mountains in Alsace, France. Six of the crew members perished that night. Lorne was rescued, hidden from the German occupiers, and treated for severe burns by the brave people of Willer-sur-Thur, Alsace, France. He was missing from December 2 to 18, 1944, when the town was liberated by the French Army. He recovered sufficiently to return to England by January 25, 1945 and he sailed back to Canada in late February. He was discharged on June 7, 1945. In 2006, Lorne returned to Willersur-Thur for the unveiling of a stone erected by the town in honour of the crew that sacrificed so much for them. He was a member of Port Perry Legion Branch 419 before he passed away on March 23, 2011.
