299 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MacKENZIE, Charles A. Jr. Charles was born in 1918 in Sussex, England. He joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve in 1940. On completion of basic training at H.M.C.S. Stadacona, he was drafted as Leading Rate 3 Gun Layer to H.M.C.S. Moose meeting and examining foreign ships. As Leading Seaman, he was posted to H.M.C.S. Annapolis, an ex US “Four Stacker” destroyer. Gaining the rank of Petty Officer, he was posted to the destroyer H.M.C.S. Ottawa on the “Derry Run” between Londonderry and Canada. The Ottawa left Britain on September 5, 1942, escorting westbound convey ON127. A German submarine Wolfpack attacked on September 10th and seven ships were lost. Near midnight on September 13th, Ottawa was torpedoed by U91, struck on the port bow. Ottawa was not sinking and reversed in the hope of saving the ship. A second torpedo struck closer to amidships and Ottawa sank. Charles was lost on September 13, 1942, along with 111 shipmates and a number of merchant seamen rescued earlier. MacKENZIE, John Alexander John was born in Four Mile Brook, NS on June 30, 1893. He joined the Army on December 17, 1917 and served in France and England. After his discharge on May 19, 1919, he returned to Canada to farm and also worked in a railroad factory. John passed away on November 23, 1963. MacKENZIE, Grant R. Grant was born on April 1, 1923 in Harriston, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in June 1942. With a background in mechanics, he served as an Aero-Engine Mechanic in Aircraft Recovery from Trenton, ON. He served to war’s end and was discharged in November 1945, returning to Harriston. With his flying experience, Grant joined the Harriston Flying Club post war. In civilian life, he worked as a mechanic, an auto salesman and auto parts salesman for Ideal Supply. He was heavily involved in sports as a player, a coach, a manager and a convener. He married Shirley Grice and raised a family of three boys and one girl. He was a founding member of the Harrison Pistol Club, the Harriston Historical Society and Maitland Valley Historic Automobile Society. He was also a member of the Harriston Knox Presbyterian Church. Later in life, he joined the Harriston Legion Brach 296 and was a member for 10 years. Grant passed away on April 13, 2010.
