297 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MacARTHUR, Peter H. D. Peter was born in Toronto, Ontario on January 5, 1937. He enlisted in the Navy on September 5, 1955 and served in Canada, the United Kingdom and on the Highseas during Peacetime. He joined the RCN in September of 1955 and entered the Royal Military College in Kingston and graduated in 1959. He received his Commission as a Sub-Lieutenant and a Graduation certificate in Mechanical Engineering. He attended Queens University and graduated with a B.Sc. in 1960. Peter served at sea in HMCS Ontario, Cayuga, Assiniboine, Kootenay, Restigouche, Chaudiere and Mackenzie. He attended the Royal Naval College, Greenwich and graduated with a specialty in Advanced Marine Engineering in 1966. Ashore, he served as Marine Engineering Officer, HMC Dockyard in Esquimalt, British Columbia. He was Design Engineer on DDH 280 Program and CPF Program. In 1980, he retired from the Canadian Forces and joined DSS as an Engineering Procurement Officer in the CPF Program. He continued in Ship Procurement of Icebreakers for Canadian Coast Guard including the Polar 8 Icebreaker Program. He retired in 1991 and has remained involved as a member of the Ottawa-Hull Naval Association and Legion Branch 625 in Richmond. MacKENZIE, Charles A. Charles was born on October 20, 1893 in the East Luther Township, ON. He enlisted with the Canadian Mounted Rifles on April 5, 1915 after serving with the 9th Mississauga Horse, a militia unit. He was re-assigned to infantry duties on June 16, 1916 and was part of the 3rd Battle of Ypres, where he was wounded to the head, shoulders, hips and back and was sent to England for treatment. He rejoined the regiment on April 9, 1917 and was wounded again, this time at Vimy Ridge. He returned to hospitals in England via the hospital ship “Western Australia” and eventually moved to Maresfield Camp for rehabilitation. While in rehabilitation, he joined the Canadian Machine Gun cross-country running team and won a number of awards. Back home in Long Branch, ON, Charles helped start the 141 Air Cadet Squadron, serving as adjutant and in 1970 was awarded the Boy Scout “Thanks Badge” for 50 years of service to scouting. Charles passed away on January 30, 1977. MacKAY, Garry Lorne Garry was born in Waterdown, Ontario 5 October 5, 1941, joined the Royal Canadian Signal Corps, 9 June 1961 at 6 PD Toronto Ontario as a Teletype Operator (212). Garry’s basic at Wosely Barracks, London Ontario and Corps training at Vimy Barracks School of Signals Kingston Ontario. Garry’s postings were Alert NWT, Western Canada Signals Troop Headquarters, Jericho Beach Vancouver, British Columbia, Western Ontario Signal Troop, Headquarters London Ontario, Northag Signals Group (2ATAF) (NATO) Germany, 272 Communications Squadron St John’s Newfoundland; 707 Communications Squadron (Norad) North Bay Ontario, 6 months posting to Canadian contingent Un Ismalia Egypt, detached to (UN/UNSO) UN DOF Damascus Syria. Garry served with the Signal Sqdn at Places King Van. Garry was Honourably Discharged on 11 March 1977. Garry’s decorations include SSM (NATO/ALERT, CF Peacekeeping, UNDOF, and the Canadian Forces Decoration. Garry has been a Member of Sir Arthur Currie Branch 116 for 12 years.
