287 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LEWIS, Charles Charles was born in the United Kingdom on June 22, 1932. After World War II, all men in the United Kingdom were conscripted to the armed forces at the age of 18 for two years. After basic training, he was selected for office work in the Orderly Room, driving and gunnery. At the end of his two years, he joined the Regular Army for three years and volunteered for Korea. This resulted in a change of regiment, a 32 day unforgettable passage on H.M.S. Fowey from Southampton to Kure, Japan, more training, a boat trip to Pusan, then a long trip to Tokchon. Their base camp was at Gloucester Hill where Charles was in charge of the Orderly Room for the 8th Royal Tank Regiment for a year. He was posted to Fayid on the Suez Canal, which in 1953 was quite hazardous, and was discharged after 18 months of service. After his discharge in March 1955, he married and immigrated to Canada where he was a member of Captain Fred Campbell V.C. LINKLATER, Kenneth Harvey Kenneth was born on January 21, 1923 in Teeswater, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on October 29, 1942 as a Gunner with the rank of Pilot Officer. After training in Trenton, Montreal and Mont Joli, he was sent to Quebec City and received his orders and Sergeant Stripes, then shipped out from Halifax in December 1943 on the Mauretania II. Bombing missions began in June 1944, out of Mildenhall. Throughout his tour of duty, Kenneth was a tail gunner and mid-upper gunner on a Lancaster and flew in 64 missions. October 31, 1944 was his last mission and he was discharged on May 29, 1945. He returned home to Canada and was discharged at this time as a Flight Officer. His awards include the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the 1939-45 Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the Royal Canadian Air Force Operational Wings. A member of Branch 183 Kincardine for over 50 years, Kenneth received the 50-year long service medal. Kenneth passed away on June 16, 2012. LINKLATER, Earle J. Earle was born on June 5, 1920 in Toronto, ON and grew up in White River, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in North Bay, ON in 1939. Earle served as a pilot with a crew of a navigator and 2 Wireless Air Gunners in No. 608 Squadron, Royal Air Force and completed a tour of operations and an arrest tour in the Middle East from 1941 to 1945. Upon returning to civilian life, he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway for 35 years. Since returning from overseas, he also had many volunteer jobs such as Reeve of White River, president of the White River Royal Canadian Legion, and chief of the White River Fire Department. In 1947, Earle married Mary and they were together for 63 years until she passed away in 2010. He is still an active member of White River Legion Branch 169.
