269 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KIRTON, Herbert G. Herbert was born on May 26, 1921 in Toronto, ON. He enlisted in the Army on July 24, 1940. He served with the 5th Canadian Armoured Division during World War II. After training in Canada and staging in England, his unit landed in Naples in November 1943 and participated in the Italian Campaign taking part in many battles including Ortona, and the Hitler lines at Cassino and Monastery Hill. Their unit continued through France and Germany and took part in the Liberation of Holland in 1945. He was discharged on November 20, 1945. Upon discharge, he was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star and the Defence Medal. He was a member of Coronation Legion Branch 286 for 57 years. Herbert passed away on May 4, 2009. KNOWLES, Richard B. Richard was born on February 20, 1935 in Toronto, ON. He enlisted in the Army in September 1951. He served with the Algonquin Regiment, B Company as Sergeant and with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment, 59th Field Artillery as 2nd Lieutenant. He was discharged in September 1961. After discharge, Richard was employed by CIBC and moved to Various Towns in Northern Ontario, including Moosonee. Richard moved to Kapuskasing in 1972 where he retired. KNOWLES, John W. John was born on March 23, 1894 in Point Edward, Lambton County, ON. He enlisted in the Army in 1915. He was sent to Officers Training School where he received the rank of Captain. He was posted overseas in 1917 and his unit was broken up for re-enforcements. He was reduced to the rank of Lieutenant and posted to D Company, 1st Battalion. They were involved in the August push and he was severely wounded on the 2nd day near Amiens. He served in Belgium and France during World War II. John passed away on July 16, 1984.
