239 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HUFFMAN, Elijah Wilson Elijah was born on March 25, 1894 in Barrie Township, Frontenac, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army in July 1915. He served with 227th Battalion in England and France during World War I. He was discharged in February 1919. He re-enlisted in November 1940 and served with No 2 E Active Convoy and served in Canada and the United Kingdom during World War II. He was discharged on September 18, 1946. Elijah passed away on December 3, 1953. HUMPHREY, Mack Mack was born in Caradoc Township on 16 September 1919. In 1941 he enlisted with the Kent Regiment. After a number of postings and training he ended up in Halifax and transferred to the Highland Light Infantry Regiment under the Canadian 3rd Division. He boarded a ship for England landing 22 May 1942. Mack was trained in England on war gasses, explosives, laying mines and removal. After a very rough crossing of the English Channel in a land craft, he landed in Normandy France on 6 June 1944 (D Day). His main responsibility in France was driving the Red Cross jeep carrying wounded back from the front lines. He also served in Holland. Mack was honourably discharged in November 1945. His decorations include the 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the War Medal 193945. Mack passed away in 2011 at the age of 91. HUGHES, Evan John John was born in Mountain Ash, South Wales, United Kingdom on August 4, 1923. He enlisted in the British Navy on February 17, 1941. He served on Hunt Class Destroyer in the North Sea and Iceland during World War II. Leading Seaman Hughes was discharged on June 16, 1947. Comrade Hughes was awarded all home fleet medals and in 2013 presented the Arctic Star. John has been a member of Branch 586 Hepworth Shallow Lake for 26 years.
