233 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HOPKINS, Henry M. Henry was born on January 1, 1891 in Tobermory, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on March 6, 1916. He served with 160 Bruce Battalion in England, France and Germany during World War I. After his discharge, Henry returned to Tobermory and worked as a fisherman. He was a Charter Member of Tobermory Legion Branch 290. Henry passed away in 1982. HOPKINS, Thomas A. E. Thomas was born on May 6, 1921 in Tobermory, ON. He enlisted in the Army on June 24, 1940. He served with the Highland Light Infantry in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. He was part of the second wave that landed at Juno Beach. He was part of the operation to clear Scheldt. Sergeant Hopkins was ordered to check farm buildings for occupants. Although it was apparent the buildings were occupied, he went on and personally stalked the German Sentry, capturing the buildings and took 45 prisoners. During interrogation, he discovered a Germany relief party was coming. With a few reinforcements they ambushed the group taking another 25 prisoners. From there, Thomas moved on to help in the liberation of Holland. He was discharged on January 24, 1946. He was awarded the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, and the Military Medal for Bravery. He was a member of Tobermory Legion Branch 290. Thomas passed away on July 12, 2007. HOPKINS, James W. James was born on January 21, 1896 in Tobermory, ON. He enlisted in the Army on December 29, 1915. He served with 160th Bruce Battalion and 18th Battalion in France and England during World War I. He was an infantry runner in Arras, France. While there, he was wounded on August 28, 1918 and had his left hand amputated. After discharge, he returned to Tobermory and worked as a farmer, tourist guide, fisherman, and painter. He was a Charter Member of Tobermory Legion Branch 290. James passed away on October 19, 1974.
