219 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HAWLEY, Cecil M. Cecil was born on October 26, 1939 in Barrie Township, Cloyne, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on March 7, 1957. He served with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He served with Group 2 as a driver and was in the Regimental Police for two years. He was discharged on April 1, 1960. After his service, he was an auto and truck mechanic and was a millwright for 25 years until he retired in 2002. Cecil has been a member of Jimmie Clarke-Northbrook Branch 328 for 26 years. HEGARTY, Francis Hugh Francis was born in Donegal, Ireland on August 23, 1917. Francis was the only child to go to secondary school and was often asked about exams, to which his reply was “I’ll likely flunk ‘er” so he became known as Uncle Flunker to his nephew. Francis enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air force and served as Pilot Officer during World War II. Francis was killed in action in 1941 in the North Sea. His body may have washed up on the coast of Holland and been buried in an unknown grave. Francis Hegarty (Uncle Flunker) will always be a hero, a person who did not “flunk ‘er” when it came to serving his country. HEBBURN, Alban A. Alban was born on August 20, 1916 in Bracebridge, ON. He had been a member of the Canadian Militia from the mid-30s until the start of World War II. He enlisted in the Army in September 1939. He served with the 4th Field Battery, Royal Canadian Artillery and the Royal Regiment of Canada in France, Holland and Germany during World War II. He was one of the few artillery men to survive Dieppe. Near the end of World War II, he was re-mustered to the Royal Regiment of Canada as an infantry Sergeant. He was discharged in October 1945. He was a member of Mount Dennis Legion Branch 31 and was a past President. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his service to The Royal Canadian Legion, the Senior Achievement Award from the Province of Ontario for his contribution to his community and in 2007 received the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation for his work with the Veterans of Canada. Alban passed away on March 28, 2011.
