211 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HARDING, Hilbert E. Hilbert was born in Richfield, NS on September 18, 1936. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in February 1954. He served with No 404 Squadron, 441 Squadron and 439 Squadron. He was posted in France for four years. He was discharged in February 1964. He was awarded the Special Service Medal with bar. Hilbert has been a member of Brooklin Legion Branch 152 for 7 years. HARPER, Douglas Howard Douglas was born on October 18, 1920 in Mills Township, ON. He enlisted in the Army on March 13, 1943. He served with the Canadian Infantry Corps, Essex Scottish Regiment in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. He was discharged on March 15, 1946. He was one of the founding members of Western Manitoulin Legion Branch 514 when it was started in Silver Water, unfortunately when it was transferred to Gore Bay his name was lost. Douglas passed away on January 8, 1990. HARPER, Alfred Thomas “Alf” Alf was born in Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire, England on August 17, 1920 and came to Canada in 1924. He enlisted in the Army in 1942. He served with the 3rd Division Highland Light Infantry in England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany during World War II. He was discharged in 1946. Alf was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. While in England, he met and married Flo Sleight who came to Canada in July 1946 as a war bride, they had 2 daughters and 1 son. Upon returning to Canada, he worked at Beatty Bros/GSW for over 48 years. He was a member of Fergus Legion Branch 275 for 40 years. Alf passed away on January 8, 2014.
