209 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HAMILTON, Henry Mervyn Mervyn was born on November 11, 1915 in Chesley, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942. He served with No 1 Wireless Relay Detachment during World War II. He was a Leading Aircraftsman for one year at the Royal Canadian Air Force Station Mountain View. He maintained airborne radios, transmitters and intercoms. He was Corporal for three years at No 1 Wireless Relay Detachment. He maintained heavy communicating equipment which allowed Gaspe on the south of the Peninsula to be in touch with another station on the north shore at Sept-Iles. He was discharged in 1946. After the war, he was a shipping foreman for Heirloom of Canada Furniture. He was married for 50 years and had 2 sons. He was a member of Chesley Legion Branch 144 for 53 years. Mervyn passed away on October 31, 1999. HANCE, Irving J. Irving was born on July 5, 1895 in Elma Township, ON. He enlisted in the Army on April 8, 1916. He served with the 173rd Battalion Canadian Highlanders and the 58th Battalion in England and France during World War I. He was wounded and spent several months in hospital in England. After the war, Irving went to dental school in North Bay, ON. He graduated in the class of 1923 and set up a practice in St. Marys, ON. He was active with the school board and a member of the Rotary Club. Irving passed away on October 8, 1947. HANBIDGE, Ralph T. Ralph was born in England in 1917. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served with No 467 Squadron in Canada, England and Europe during World War II. Pilot Officer Hanbidge was killed in action on the Duisburg mission on the night of January 8, 1943. He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial in England and on the Cenotaph in Omemee, ON.
