393 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND YOUNG, Harry B. Born on August 30, 1909 on Rosebank Farm, Lot 2, Con. 8, Brant Township in Bruce County, ON, Harry was the youngest son of Henry H. Young and Fanny Christie. He graduated from the Ontario Agricultural College and then enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on May 15, 1942. He was posted to Western Air Command and based at Prince Rupert, and later at Patricia Bay on Vancouver Island. For six weeks in early 1943, he was on a controllers’ course at the U.S. Army Air Forces School of Applied Tactics in Orlando, Florida. In October 1944, Harry went overseas to northwestern Europe and served as an RCAF radar officer attached to the RAF and posted to fighter control in the 2nd Tactical Air Force. After the war, he worked in the Veterans’ Land Act administration office in Hamilton, ON. Harry passed away on January 5, 1976. YOUNG, R. Alexander “Alex” Born on June 13, 1897 at Rosebank Farm, Lot 2, Con. 8 in Brant Township, Bruce County, ON, Alex was the fourth son of Henry H. Young and Fanny Christie. In November 1917, Alex registered under the Military Service Act in Lethbridge, AB. He was at home in Brant Township, Bruce County, when he was conscripted into the 1st Depot Battalion of the Western Ontario Regiment in London, ON in June 1918. Alex went overseas to England in July and served with the 4th Canadian Reserve Battalion, Infantry based at Witley Military Camp. His active service form does not show him being posted to a fighting battalion before the war ended and him being discharged on March 13, 1919. There is a family story that he attended reunions of the Royal Canadian Regiment in London after the war. Alex did a variety of things after the war, including construction work on the Flin Flon Railway in Manitoba, farming in Brant and Greenock Townships, supplemented by collecting scrap metal and logging. He passed away on September 3, 1959. YOUNG, Joseph W. “Joe” Joseph was born on December 21, 1896 on Lot 5, Con. 8, Elderslie Township in Bruce County, ON. His parents, John C. Young and Mary E. Elves, later moved the family to Saugeen Township, Bruce County. After finishing high school, Joe taught public school on Manitoulin Island for a short time before enlisting in the 160th Overseas Bruce Battalion during World War I. When the 160th was disbanded in England in early 1918, he was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps, 3rd Division. The closest Joe came to death was when his unit was lying in a field under enemy fire, and a bullet ripped through the heel of his boot without touching him. After discharge, Joe farmed in Saugeen Township and later in Elderslie Township. He married Hazel Jones, and they had three children: Wilbert, Hardie and Edith. Joe was also clerk of Elderslie Township for more than three years. Joe retired to Chesley, ON in 1967 and was a member of Chesley Legion Branch 144 before he passed away at Chesley Hospital on May 17, 1970.
