387 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND WILSON (CUMBY), Muriel Brenda Brenda was born in London, England on October 14, 1924. Formerly a nurse with the British Red Cross, she enlisted in the British Army in October 1943. She served with the Auxiliary Territory Service in England and was trained to operate a radar station on the East Coast of England. While re-mustered in the Pay Corps, Brenda met Tom Wilson, a remustered Dispatch Rider in the Royal Canadian Air Force. They were married in 1945 and moved to Canada to start their life together. She was discharged in January 1946 and became a member of Port Perry Legion Branch 419. Brenda passed away on May 17, 2009. WINTERBURN, Cecil R. Cecil was born on June 4, 1922 in Norland, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on November 26, 1942 and served with the Canadian Infantry Corps, the Queen’s Own Rifles, and the Scottish Regiment in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He landed on D-Day, first day, second wave and was involved in every battle from France to Holland. After his discharge on February 6, 1946, he returned home on the first ship back to Canada. Cecil passed away on July 7, 2003. WILSON, Thomas R. Thomas was born in Portadown, Ireland on July 1, 1924. At the age of 15, he immigrated to Canada to work on the farms in southwestern Ontario. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in January 1942 and served with Medical Orderlies Division and No. 408 Squadron in England during World War II. His posts also included air traffic control and he will never forget his airfield being bombed with the loss of 125 men. While remustered as a Dispatch Rider, Thomas met Brenda Cumby, a British Army Auxiliary Territory Service Radar Operator. He was discharged in August 1945 and married in November of the same year. Thomas has been a member of Port Perry Legion Branch 419 for 37 years.
