383 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND WATT, Louise R. Louise was born in Pennsburg, PA, United States on April 13, 1922. In April 1944, she enlisted in the Army. She served with the Army Medical Corps during World War II. In March 1947, she joined the United States Army Reserve at Fort Dix, New Jersey where her speciality was occupational therapy. After two years with the Army Medical Speciality Corps, she transferred to the Veterans Administration Hospital which was newly opened and worked there for 20 years. She also attended the Army Reserve Training Programs at various New England hospitals becoming a Major. In 1961, she resigned and moved to Ottawa, Canada. WELCH, Albert L. Albert was born in Westport, NS in February 1896. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in January 1916 and served with the 112th Infantry Battalion in the High Seas, Germany and England during World War I. In the summer of 1916, he was shipped to England and trained briefly at Bramshot where he was reassigned to the 25th Battalion of the 5th Brigade, 2nd Division. His first combat was on the Somme in 1916. In April 1917, he was at Vimy Ridge where he was seriously wounded. After recovering, he was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps, whereupon he was involved in the hellish battle of Passchendaele in 1917. After participating in the battle of Canal du Nord in the 1918, which led to the Allied Victory, he was part of the occupation force in Germany until March 1919, when he was repatriated and released. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. In civilian life, he became a lighthouse keeper at Westpoint in 1921, a post he held until 1960. He was a member of Carpiquet Legion Branch 92. Albert passed away in 1995 at the age of 95. WELCH, Alan L. Alan was born in Westport, NS on December 13, 1942. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on September 29, 1959 and served as a finance officer in the Royal Canadian Army Pay Corps and Logistics Branch. Major Welch served in Germany, Norway and Cyprus. After the war, he was employed as Public Servant with the National Defense, Corrections Canada and the Canada Revenue Agency. He married Evelyn in 1967 and they had three children. He was awarded the Special Service Medal (NATO), the Canadian Peace Keeping Service Medal, the UN Force in Cyprus, and the Canadian Forces Decoration with Clasp. Alan has been a member of Sir Arthur Currie Legion Branch 116 for 10 years.
