377 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND VITTIE, James E. James was born on September 26, 1894 in the Township of Howick, ON to Thomas and Rachel Vittie. On March 16, 1916, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army and then served with the 161st Battalion in battles at Vimy Ridge, Lens, Passchendaele, Amiens, and Arris. He was wounded at Vimy Ridge and sent to a hospital in France for a short time before returning to Vimy Ridge where he remained until the Armistice was signed. Quarter Sergeant Vittie was discharged in early 1919. He met Gladys Marjorie Roberts in England and they got married on January 15, 1919. They moved to Canada and took up farming in the Gorrie area where they remained until they sold the farm and moved to Welland where they farmed until retiring to Fordwich. He was a Life Member of Howick Legion Branch 307 and his wife Gladys was a Life Member of the Howick Ladies Auxiliary. He was awarded a Certificate of Merit for his services to the Howick Branch as a Colour Bearer and the Diamond Jubilee Medal. James passed away on January 19, 1986. WAIN, George E. George was born on June 11, 1895 in Tara, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on May 1, 1916. He served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War I. George was killed in action in France in 1917 and is buried in LOOS British Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, France. VOLIGNY, Martial F. Martial was born on May 21, 1938 in Windsor, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on November 25, 1954 and served on HMCS Hunter, HMCS Wallaceburg, HMCS Minas, and HMCS Wolfe. In August 1956, he transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was discharged on March 21, 1957. Martial has been a member of Essex Legion Branch 201 for 45 years.
