375 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND VIDLER, Jeff R. Jeff was born on April 26, 1956 in Chatham, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on July 5, 1979 and was posted to the East Coast on completion of Basic Training at CFRS Cornwallis. He served on various classes of ships and instructed at the Fleet School, Windsor Park, Halifax, NS. Jeff was a part of the commissioning crew of HMCS Toronto and decommissioning crew of HMCS Ottawa and HMCS Terra Nova. As well as serving on board HMCS Toronto in the Adriatic Sea from August 1993 to January 1994. He retired in August 2004. Jeff volunteers in various committees and has been a member of Corporal Harry Miner, V.C. Legion Branch 185 for 15 years as well as 1st Vice Chair, Poppy chairperson and Public Relations Officer. VIDLER, Oliver J. Oliver was born on July 2, 1927 in Chatham, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy and served on HMCS Uganda and HMCS Magnificent in North Belfast, Ireland. After the war, he bought a commercial fishing tug, the Eau Jay, but unfortunately, due to an accident, an explosion ended his career one member of his crew lost his life. He then operated a Grocery Store, coffee shop, fish store and then became the owner/founder of Molly & OJ’s Restaurant and Sandbar and Motel. Every remembrance day, when services are held in Erieau, his Restaurant & Sandbar hosts all those that parade with food and drinks. He was married to Molly McCoy of Belfast, Ireland and they had four children. Oliver was a member of Corporal Harry Miner, V.C., for 50 years before he passed away on April 6, 2005. VIDLER, John R. John was born on September 10, 1922 in Erieau, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on February 12, 1943. During his service, he served on HMCS Orillia and HMCS Algonquin in the North Atlantic on convoy duties and taught seamanship at HMCS Cornwallis, Ceylon and Malta. John was discharged on December 14, 1945 and went on to work for Lake Erie Navigational Company onboard the coal freighter S.S. Alexander Leslie. In 1964, he left sailing and worked for a time doing appliance repairs before going to work for the South Western Regional Centre for the Mentally Handicapped as a stationary engineer and finally retired in 1985. He married Ruth Dunlop of Chatham, ON and had four children. John was a member of Harry Miner, V.C. Branch 185 for over 50 years before he passed away on September 6, 2001.
