369 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND THORNTON, Robert C. “Bob” Bob was born on July 15, 1926 in Windsor, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on January 25, 1943. He was shipped to Camp Ipperwash to begin basic and advanced training, and then in July 1943 he volunteered for overseas draft. He boarded the Queen Mary and set sail for Great Britain, landing in Scotland then went to Aldershot, England by train. Bob’s father, who was already a Sergeant in II Canadian Corps Headquarters, stumbled upon Bob by accident and claimed him for II Canadian Corps. Two weeks after D-Day, he was sent to France and travelled through Europe until he reached Germany. Victory in Europe Day was celebrated in a hospital in Antwerp, Belgium for Bob. Following his discharge on April 6, 1946, he spent 31 years on the Fire Department before retiring in 1980 with the rank of Assistant Chief-Training. Bob has been a member of Harry Wray Legion Branch 302 for 28 years. TOON, John S. John was born in London, England on April 7, 1930. He received his education at the Loughborough College and the University of Manchester in London. At the age of 14, he left home and enlisted in the Royal Navy at HMS St. Vincent Boy Training Establishment. He served with the British Home Fleet 7th Destroyer Flotilla on the HMS Zephyr and the HMS Duke of York during World War II. He received superficial wounds from an exploding rogue mine in the North Sea. By the end of World War II, he was commissioned to an Officer rank. After his discharge, he worked as a journalist and trained for the priesthood. Reverend Toon has been Zone 4 Padre and a member of Oshawa Legion Branch 43. TINER, William Avery William was born on September 29, 1917 in Owen Sound, ON. On June 10, 1940, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army Grey and Simcoe Foresters and transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy where he trained in motor torpedo boats and in landing craft assaults. He participated in landings at Algiers, Sicily, and Juno Beach, Normandy on June 6, 1944. He was discharged in 1945 and reenlisted in 1950 with the Royal Canadian Engineers; he then served in Korea, Egypt, and Germany. He served for a total of 23 years and was discharged in 1968. He retired to Markdale, ON where he was a member of Flesherton-Markdale Legion Branch 333. William passed away on March 18, 2010.
