367 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND THACKERAY, James Harvey Harvey was born on March 16, 1914 in Goodwater, SK. In 1937, the Depression forced his family to move to Fergus, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on June 26, 1942 along with his twin brother and they boarded a troop train to Dundurn, SK for advanced training. He served with the Canadian Armoured Corps 2nd Division, and the 30th Reconnaissance Battalion, Essex Regiment, C Squadron. He saw active duty in England during World War II where he attained the rank of Trooper Lance Corporal and was given advanced training to instruct on Bren Gun Carriers as a driver/mechanic in the military wing of a depot in England. He was discharged on March 10, 1946 and was awarded the Defense Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. After the war, he operated a mechanical business for over 30 years. He was a Life Member of Harriston Legion Branch 296 for 45 years and was a Past President. Harvey passed away on November 17, 1992. THOMPSON-HIRST, Daphne I. Daphne was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on September 18, 1922. She worked for Kodak Printing and Developers in Northern Ireland and her boss thought she would be the most skilled and useful to the Air Force. She joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and served with the Film Service Special Unit in Northern Ireland and England during World War II. She flew with bomber crews taking pictures which were developed upon their return to the air base. As an intelligence officer, she had to interpret the pictures. She helped fly prisoners of war from Europe to England and some of the prisoners were in poor shape and needed medical treatment. After the war, she and her husband were in Northern Ireland before being sent to Portugal for seven years and then to Canada. She was presented with a medal for bravery by Queen Elizabeth at the Buckingham Palace. Daphne has been a member of Chesley Legion Branch 144 for 33 years. THACKERAY, William Harold Harold was born on March 16, 1914 in Goodwater, SK. In 1937, the Depression forced his family to move to Fergus, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on June 26, 1942 along with his twin brother and they boarded a troop train to Dundurn, SK for advanced training. He served with the 30th Reconnaissance Battalion, Essex Regiment. Unfortunately, he was unable to meet with required military physical standards and was discharged in August 1943. He returned to Toronto, ON where he was employed as a bus driver. He later went into partnership with his twin brother, Harvey, their business was Thackeray Bros. Garage located in Harriston, ON. In 1968, he left the partnership and was appointed Justice of the Peace for the County of Wellington and a Police Constable for the Town of Harriston. He was a member of Harriston Legion Branch 296 for 30 years. Harold passed away on November 12, 1982.
