361 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SUMMERS, Isobel A. Isobel was born in Sunderland, England on May 22, 1921. She enlisted in the British Forces in November 1941 and served with the British Women’s Auxiliary Air Force during World War II. She started at Gloucester Depot before being posted to Blackpool and Lucas near Dundee. Isobel worked mainly in the administration field as a librarian or in the Warrant Offices, until she met her Canadian Air Force husband in Leuchars, Scotland near St. Andrews. In order to be with him she transferred to No. 415 Squadron where he worked as a wireless air gunner while she was employed in the Officer’s Mess. She was discharged in July 1944 as a Lance Corporal and came to Canada as a war bride in 1946. Isobel has been a member of Sir Arthur Currie Legion Branch 116 for over 39 years. SWATRIDGE, Lionel Edward Lionel was born on September 5, 1921 in Stratford, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on March 13, 1941 and received his wings (commissioned as a Pilot Officer) in Yorkton, SK on December 5, 1941. He served with No. 111 Squadron in Northern Europe during World War II and participated in sweeps over Belgium and Northeastern France. Lionel was killed in action on July 21, 1942 over the North Sea. SWATRIDGE, George Frederick George was born in 1854 in Hampshire, England. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on November 17, 1914 claiming his birthday was March 11, 1875. He served with the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force during World War II and was a member of the Grenadier Guards at one time. George served as a barber.
