353 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND STAINTHORPE, George D. George was born on December 28, 1908 in North Ormesby, England. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on November 25, 1939 and served with the 35th Battery in England and Italy during World War II. He left to go overseas in December 1939. George transferred to the Lanark and Renfrew Scottish Regiment on March 11, 1941 and was promoted to Acting Lance Bombardier. He transferred again on July 13, 1944 to the Canadian Provost Corps and reverted to the rank of Private before being promoted to Lance Corporal. While Advancing in the front lines and engaging in conflict with Nazi defenders he received a minor injury from shrapnel to his leg. Upon discharge on July 16, 1945, he worked as a labourer at a saw mill in Sawyerville, QC. In April 1947, he purchased a farm in Melbourne Ridge, QC which he owned for a little while before selling it and moving to Toronto in June 1967 to work with Alcan Aluminium as a warehouse custodian. He retired in 1975. He was a member of Dambusters Legion Branch 617. George passed away on June 5, 1985. STEELE, Raymond A. Raymond was born on October 5, 1921 in Orillia, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on May 26, 1942 and served with the 8th Canadian Field Squadron Royal Canadian Engineers in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. He was wounded about two weeks before the war ended at Küsten Canal, Germany. He was in a Bren Gun carrier that hit a land mine and totally lost his hearing. His hearing returned to one ear after three months and partially returned to his other ear much later. After the war, he stayed in England to help put the buildings that were used by the army back to their original condition. He returned to Canada and was discharged in May 1946. Raymond did general carpentry work, including building homes, until becoming the Carpenter Foreman at Huronia Regional Centre in Orillia, ON. He married in 1951 and had four boys. He built his home as well as a cottage on Lake Simcoe. He was a member of Orillia Legion Branch 34. Raymond passed away from Congestive Heart Failure in 1988. STARR, Rupert Kelson Rupert was born in East Forkes, York, England on September 14, 1885. He enlisted in the British Army in 1909 and served with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment for two and a half years. He immigrated to Canada and served with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment. He received his attestation with the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on March 12, 1916 and was assigned to the 98th Battalion but went overseas with the 4th Battalion. Lieutenant Starr was killed in action at Vimy Ridge on April 9, 1917.
