351 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SPEARMAN, Lloyd G. Lloyd was born on February 4, 1923 in Brantford, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on November 10, 1943 and received his basic training at Ipperwash, ON and Chatham, NB before going overseas. He was assigned to the Princess Louise Dragoon Guards and sent to the Mediterranean area to join the Italian Campaign. They worked their way north from Sicily to Rome, engaging in battles with the Italians and the Germans. Lloyd suffered one small wound when a bullet grazed his back as he was lying prone while engaged in gunfire exchange. When the war ended in 1945, he remained in Europe until 1946 as part of the Army of Occupation. Lloyd was also in a demonstration platoon which went from base to base performing demonstration drills. Lloyd passed away on May 7, 1993. SQUANCE, George H. George was born on September 24, 1920 in Hartland, England. He enlisted in the Royal Navy in December 1940 and served on eight different ships from the North Atlantic to the South Pacific and the waters around Australia, Africa and the Mediterranean during World War II. He survived the sinking of HMS Jupiter in the Battle of the Java Sea in February 1942, floating two days on a Carley float before coming ashore, evading Japanese air strikes and commandeering a vessel with other survivors to land in Fremantle, Australia some eleven days later. He transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy in 1954, serving on nine ships and two submarines until retiring from the service as Chief Warrant Officer in December 1970. His medals include the 1939-45 Star, the Africa Star, the Pacific Star, the Victory Medal, the Special Services Medal – NATO, the Centennial Medal 1967 and the Canadian Forces Decoration with Clasp. He has been a Life Member of the Peterborough Naval Association, the Submariners Association of Canada, the Atlantic Chief and Petty Officer Association. He has also been a member of the Burma Star Association and Peterborough Legion Branch 52. SPEERS, Percy H. Percy was born on June 15, 1893 in the Arran Township, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on February 26, 1916 and served with the 44th Infantry Battalion in France during World War I. Percy was killed in action in 1918 in France and is buried at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in Pas-de-Calais, France.
