349 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SMITH, William M. William was born on October 18, 1909 in Tobermory, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on October 20, 1942. He served with the Highland Light Infantry and the Essex Regiment in the United Kingdom, Continental Europe, Holland, and Germany during World War II. He was discharged on February 9, 1946 and returned to Tobermory where he worked as a commercial fisherman. His medals include the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star and the Defense Medal. He was a member of Tobermory Legion Branch 290. William passed away on October 7, 1975. SPEARMAN, Joseph Joseph was born on November 12, 1861 in Forest, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on April 11, 1916 claiming to be 45 years old in order to join. He served with the 142nd Battalion in France during World War I. He was discharged 21 months later, on January 11, 1918 due to sickness contracted on active duty. Joseph passed away in 1947. SMITH, William M. William was born on January 29, 1914 in Petrolia, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on March 19, 1943. He served as engine room artificer and Chief Petty Officer during World War II. He worked from the Halifax harbour on the following ships: HMCS Hunter, HMCS York, HMCS Stadacona, HMCS Scotian, HMCS Star, and HMCS Peregrine. After his discharge on December 10, 1945, he worked as a first class pipefitter at Canadian Oil and Dow Chemical in Petrolia and Sarnia. William passed away on March 22, 1988.
