341 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SMITH, Gordon E. Gordon was born on March 19, 1925 in Toronto, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in January 1943 and received his basic training in Toronto, ON. He was posted to CFB Petawawa and was one of five recruits who qualified for paratrooper training in Winnipeg and Shilo. He served with the 1st Canadian Paratroopers in England, India, Burma and Pakistan during World War II. Gordon was a bren gunner preparing for the D-Day drop when an ammo box was dropped and hit him, collapsing his chute and he fell to the ground. He regained consciousness on a hospital floor with a broken back and leg and had to wear a leg cast for ten weeks and a body cast for five months. After spending some time in a hospital in Glasgow, Scotland, he returned home on a hospital ship in July 1945 and was discharged in September of the same year. Gordon has been a member of Bala Legion Branch 424 for 26 years. SMITH, Hugh John Hugh was born on October 23, 1897 in Grey County, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on March 6, 1917 and served with the 248th Grey Battalion in France and Belgium. Private Smith was discharged on May 23, 1919 after which returned to his paternal home, married, and raised five children. Hugh passed away on April 3, 1985. SMITH, Henry T. Henry was born in London, England on September 11, 1881. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in September 1914 and served with the 18th Battalion in England, France, and Belgium during World War I. Upon returning to civilian life after his discharge in 1916, Henry was a spring maker at the GTR and the CNR Stratford repair shop for many years until an accident cost him an eye. He was a member of Stratford Legion Branch 8 for 42 years. Henry passed away on September 20, 1958.
