339 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SMITH, Alfred E. Alfred was born on September 17, 1909 in Stratford, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in May 1940 and served with the Perth Regiment in England during World War II. He was discharged after an injury to his knee in England and returned to Canada to work as a Chef at the Boys Training School in Bowmanville. Alfred passed away of cancer on February 14, 1969. SMITH, Frederick A. Frederick was born on July 4, 1913 in Stratford, ON. He had been employed at Swift Canada until he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in May 1940. Leaving his pregnant wife and one child back home he went to serve with the Perth Regiment of Canada in England and Italy during World War II. Frederick was killed in action in Italy in December 1944 and sadly never got to meet his son. SMITH, Doris E. Doris was born on January 26, 1925 in Komoka, ON. She joined the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service on March 30, 1944. She served as a Captain’s writer during World War II and was the first woman and only person from Strathroy to ever set foot on the HMCS Strathroy. Doris was discharged on March 20, 1946 and was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, and the 1939-45 War Medal. She was a member of Sir Arthur Currie Legion Branch 116 for 36 years. Doris passed away on February 10, 2013.
