331 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SANDERSON, K. Hardie Hardie was born in 1916 in Chesley, ON to Stanley Sanderson and Nellie Campbell. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943. Military service meant that Hardie and his young family moved around a lot. Leading Aircraftsman Sanderson was at Trenton for a time and by March of 1945, he was stationed at the Clinton, ON air base. After the war, they settled in Toronto where he was a salesman for G.H. Woods. Hardie passed away on February 13, 1956. SHAW, James James was born in Oldham, England on February 15, 1900. He joined the Royal Canadian Army in 1917 and served with the Royal Artillery during World War I and again during World War II. He saw active service in England and Belgium. James passed away on May 17, 1950. SANDERSON, Robert M. Robert was born on September 28, 1920 in Chesley, ON to Stanley Sanderson and Nellie Campbell. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on March 9, 1943 and served with the Essex Scottish Regiment, 2nd Division in Holland, Germany and England during World War II. He spent 19 months on active infantry service in Canada before being sent overseas in October 1944. On February 19, 1945 his company mistakenly rode into the midst of a German Panzer Division near Louisendorf, Germany. Lieutenant Corporal Sanderson was taken prisoner and sent to Stalag XIB, south of Hamburg, Germany. After his discharge in 1946, he married Marie Lustig and became a dentist and practiced in Windsor. In 1993, his wife published “Letters from a Soldier”, a collection of wartime letters from Robert to his family. Robert passed away on October 10, 1978.
