307 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PRINGLE, Wilfrid C. Wilfrid was born on January 20, 1922 in Baldwin, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in December 1941 and served with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals in Europe during World War II. He was discharged in May 1946. On his way back to Canada on the Ile de France, he was almost drowned when the ship cut into a huge wave but was left unharmed. Wilfrid has been a member of Captain Frank Campbell V.C. Legion Branch 134 for 20 years. PROUSE, Robert A. Robert was born in Verdun, QC on February 14, 1911. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in April 1940 and served with the Canadian Provost Corps in England and France. He rode motorcycle escort for Winston Churchill, the King and the Queen, as well as Princess Patricia. He was offered officers training but chose a special manoeuvre (Dieppe Raid) instead. He was wounded by shrapnel and eventually captured during the Dieppe Raid. Robert kept a diary and wrote poems which he hid under the barrack’s floor boards. Rice paper maps of Europe were smuggled inside Christmas crackers and he used it to escape twice, almost making it to the border but was recaptured. He was liberated on April 2, 1945.He published photos and German documents from the commandants office in A Ticket to Hell via Dieppe. His awards include the Medal of Recognition for Dieppe from the Governor General. He became the general manager of the glassware department of Eton’s in Toronto and later joined Hughes and Sons Cornflower Lead Crystal as sales manager. Robert passed away on January 4, 1999. PRINGLE, William D. William was born on May 11, 1890 in Denbigh, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on May 4, 1916 and served with the 228th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force and the 6th Battalion of the Canadian Railway Troops in France, Flanders and Belgium during World War I. He also served during World War II with the Veterans Guard of Canada, 7th Company stationed at Espanola, Petawawa and Monteith, ON. William served five years with 7 Company and was a member of the Company Pipe Band. He was discharged on March 30, 1919. He was a Life Member of Spanish Legion Branch 576. William passed away on September 8, 1985.
