273 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MEYER, Alphones G. “Alf” Alf was born in Kerrobert, SK on November 7, 1923. He joined the Royal Canadian Army in April 1943 and served with the Algonquin Regiment in France, Germany, Belgium and Holland during World War II. Alf was discharged in September 1945. MICHAELIS, Carl Frederick Carl was born on December 29, 1917 in Thornton, ON. He worked on farms in Simcoe County and Western Canada until 1937 when he joined the Militia and spent the next three years working in construction at Camp Borden. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on June 20, 1940 and served with the Grey and Simcoe Foresters as a trooper and learned to service tanks and other vehicles used by the Regiment. In June 1943, he embarked for England and the Regiment was disbanded to become reinforcements for other armoured units and he was transferred to the Fort Garry Horse. Carl saw active duty in England, France, Belgium, and Holland during World War II. He was discharged on September 29, 1945 and returned to his wife and infant son. After the war, he worked as a truck mechanic for most of his career until his retirement in 1980. Carl passed away on November 14, 1982. MICHAELIS, Albert Thomas Albert was born on April 12, 1919 in Thornton, ON to George and Gertrude Michaelis. After the loss of the family farm in 1932, he found work on local farms and looked for work in Saskatchewan and Alberta. He joined the Militia in 1937 and the Grey and Simcoe Foresters in 1940. In June 1943, he contracted mumps and as a result was unable to travel to England with the rest of the regiment. After his recovery, he served with various infantry reinforcement regiments before joining the Algonquin Regiment, 10th Infantry Brigade, 4th Canadian Armoured Division. He served in Holland and Germany during World War II. Albert was killed in action on March 9, 1945 during Operation Blockbuster in Veen, Germany. He is buried in the Canadian Military Cemetery southeast of Nijmegen, Holland.
