249 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MARTIN, Arthur S. Arthur was born on August 21, 1889 in Wiarton, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on September 14, 1914 and served with the 32nd Manitoba Horse Guards and the Royal Canadian Dragoons in England, France, and Germany. While serving with the Royal Canadian Dragoons, he was part of the advance on the Hindenburg line in 1918, and the last of the Great Cavalry charges. They attacked a German stronghold and cleared the enemy but had a devastating loss of men and horses. It was likely during this raid that Lance Corporal Martin was gassed. He was discharged on April 19, 1919 and went on to serve as Justice of the Peace and also operated a Guide Boat for Tourists. He was awarded the Military Medal for Bravery, the British War Medal, the Victory Medal, and the 1914-15 Star. He was a member of Tobermory Legion Branch 290. Arthur suffered a heart attack while on a fishing trip with a group of tourists and passed away shortly after in 1946. MARTINEAU, Garnet W. Garnet was born on December 27, 1923 in Thessalon, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in 1941 and served with the Cameron Highlanders in Europe during World War II. He was discharged in 1945 and returned to Thessalon to marry and raise a family. He was a member of Thessalon Legion Branch 182 for over 20 years. Garnet passed away on June 14, 1968. MARTIN, Robert J. H. Robert was born in Dromore, Northern Ireland on February 5, 1901. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in September 1939 and served with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers during World War II. During the war, he served as a mechanic repairing tanks and an instructor for new mechanics. He was discharged in July 1945 as Company Sergeant-Major. Robert passed away on December 9, 1968.
