313 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND VENABLES, James S. James was born in Thorold Township near Welland, Ontario on April 29, 1923. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on November 20, 1942 and served at 164 Transport S&D in Moncton, New Brunswick. He loaded and flew aircraft every day for two years, earning an extra $.75/hr for an hourly rate of $2.00. He then remustered to Fitter General and went to Goose Bay, Labrador for one year. After VE-Day and VJ-Day, E. S. Fox Ltd. sent James to Ottawa as they had a large job for him to do in Preston, Ontario. James was discharged on October 14, 1945. He has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for nine years. VENTON, George A. George was born in Toronto, Ontario on August 31, 1919. He joined the Royal Canadian Army on May 28, 1940 and served with the 48th Highlanders of Canada in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the Central Mediterranean. He was wounded in Sicily and again in Italy before being discharged on June 20, 1945. George re-enlisted with the 48th Highlanders of Canada after the war and stayed until the mid-1960s when he retired with the rank of Company Sergeant Major. George passed away on November 10, 1991. VENNING, William Henry William was born on June 20, 1909 in Toronto, Ontario. He started in the Royal Canadian Engineers on September 21, 1942 as a Sapper serving in Canada and England, and finished as a Lance Corporal with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps at the time of his discharge on February 14, 1946. He was awarded the Defence Medal, the King George Active Service Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. William was a member of Bolton Legion Branch 371 for more than fifty years until he passed away on February 17, 1999.
